Class Enrollment Cancellation Policy: Classes conducted are based on enrollments. Therefore, class cancellation by student within ten (10) days prior to start of class, or failure to attend ("no-show") by student is subject to forfeiture of entire fee and no credit will be issued. No exceptions. Refunds may be requested only if scheduled course canceled by the Nautical School.

The Marine Radio Operators Permit exams consists of basic operation and laws. Element 1 is the only element tested for this license. It consists of 24 questions from a pool of 144 questions. To pass you must successfully answer 18 of those questions from this testing element.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must:

  • be a legal resident of (or otherwise eligible for employment in) the United States; and
  • be able to receive and transmit spoken messages in English; and
  • pass a written examination
Term of License

A Marine Radio Operator Permit is issued for the holder's lifetime and is issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Written Examination Elements

Element 1 - Basic radio law and operating practice with which every maritime radio operator should be familiar. To pass, an examinee must correctly answer at least 18 out of 24 questions. The course fee includes the study material and  application fees. There is an additional $35 issuance fee to the FCC after application is submitted. Nautical School provides sample questions to study and the 24 question test is available by appointment anytime.
